There is a myth going around that fueling for a half marathon means fancy gels and powders you can only buy from a specialty running shop. Not true at all!
Some of the best fuel out there is sitting in your pantry right now, lol.
This list is here to bust that myth and show you what actually works, mile after mile. I scrolled through way too many running forums and Pinterest boards pulling these together.
The goal was simple. Keep only the ideas that are budget-friendly, easy to prep the night before and actually taste good after mile eight.
You will find fuel for every part of training here. Long runs, race week, the morning of and even recovery after you cross the line.
Some of these are grab and go. Others need a little more planning, so I noted that under each one.
Use this as a starting point and swap in whatever your stomach agrees with best. Every runner’s gut is a little different, am I right?
HALF MARATHON FUEL IDEAS
Energy Gels Flat Lay
We’re starting off strong with a classic energy gels flat lay. Lining them up before a long run helps you actually plan your fueling instead of guessing.
Space them out by flavor so you’re not eating three sour apple gels in a row. Nobody wants that, haha!
- The mile 6 lifesaver
- Fits in a small pouch
- Rotate flavors so nothing gets old
- Works for half or full distance
Homemade Sports Drink Recipe
Homemade sports drinks are cheaper than the store bought kind and you control exactly what goes in. Water, a little salt, some honey and citrus juice does the whole job.
Skip the neon dye and heavy syrup. This one tastes like something you’d actually want to drink, not a chemistry set.
- Cheaper than the gas station kind
- Mixes in five minutes
- Salt keeps cramps away
- Ready to chill overnight
Mid Race Fuel Belt Setup
A mid race fuel belt setup keeps everything within reach so you’re not fumbling at mile nine. Small flasks, a couple gels and maybe a salt tab all clip on without bouncing around.
Test the belt on a long run first. Race day is not the time to discover it rubs, lol!
- No mid race fumbling
- Holds two small flasks
- Zero bounce once it’s fitted
- Room for salt tabs too
Salted Caramel Energy Bites
Salted caramel energy bites are basically dessert disguised as fuel. Dates, oats and a pinch of salt blend into something that tastes way better than it has any right to.
Roll them small so they fit in a gel pocket. They hold up fine at room temperature for a whole race.
- Tastes like dessert, works like fuel
- No baking required
- Dates do the sweetening
- Freezes well for weeks
Banana Peanut Butter Wrap
Who doesn’t love banana and peanut butter, am I right? Wrapped in a tortilla, it becomes the easiest pre run snack you’ll ever make.
This one digests fast and gives a nice steady burst of energy.
- The classic combo, portable now
- Ready in two minutes
- Travels well in foil
- Gentle on a nervous stomach
Post Run Recovery Smoothie
A post run recovery smoothie is where all the protein and carbs your body just burned through get replaced. Frozen fruit, protein powder and a splash of milk blend up in under a minute.
Add a scoop of nut butter if you want it to actually hold you over until your next real meal.
- The first thing after crossing the line
- Blends in sixty seconds
- Frozen fruit keeps it thick
- Protein for the muscles
Overnight Oats For Runners
Overnight oats might be the single easiest thing on this whole list of long run fuel ideas. Mix them the night before, grab the jar and you’re out the door.
They sit well before an early run because nothing about them is heavy. Add banana or berries depending on what’s in the fridge.
- Made the night before, gone by dawn
- No cooking at 5am
- Oats give slow release energy
- Ready straight from the fridge
DIY Trail Mix Packets
DIY trail mix packets solve the problem of what to eat on a run that’s longer than an hour but not race day yet. Pretzels, dried fruit and a few chocolate chips cover salty, sweet and quick sugar all at once.
Portion them into small bags ahead of time. That way you’re not tempted to eat the whole batch before you even lace up, lol!
- The 90 minute mark fix
- Portioned the night before
- Salty and sweet in one bag
- No melting in a warm pocket
Rice Cake Nut Butter Snack
Rice cakes topped with nut butter are underrated fuel. Light, crunchy and easy on the stomach before a long effort.
Spread a thin layer so it doesn’t feel heavy. A drizzle of honey on top never hurts.
Pasta Carb Loading Dinner
A pasta dinner is the textbook carb load meal ideas move and for good reason. Plain marinara over noodles gives your muscles the glycogen they’ll be begging for on race morning.
Skip the heavy cream sauce and skip the extra cheese too. Simple wins the night before a race, every single time.
- The night before staple
- Marinara keeps it light
- Easy on a nervous stomach
- Feeds a crowd cheaply
Sweet Potato Carb Bowl
Sweet potato carb bowls are a nice change of pace from bread and pasta. Roasted sweet potato, a scoop of rice and some grilled chicken cover carbs and protein in one bowl.
This one also travels well if you’re eating at your desk the day before a race.
- A change of pace from pasta
- Roasts in thirty minutes
- Balanced carbs and protein
- Reheats fine the next day
Bagel Toppings For Runners
Bagels are a runner’s best friend two days out. Top one with almond butter and banana or go savory with cream cheese and turkey, both work.
The dense carbs sit well without weighing you down.
- The two days out go to
- Dense carbs, light stomach
- Sweet or savory topping works
- Cheap and easy to grab
Low Fiber Race Week Dinners
Low fiber dinners during race week keep things calm where it counts. Think white rice, plain chicken and cooked vegetables instead of the salad and beans phase.
Fiber is great most weeks but not the one right before you’re standing at a start line.
- White rice over brown
- Skip the beans this week
- Cooked veggies only, no raw
Hydration Focused Meal Schedule
A hydration focused meal schedule for race week is one of those race week meal plan ideas nobody talks about enough. Spacing water and electrolytes evenly across the day matters more than one giant gulp the morning of.
Add a pinch of salt to meals starting a few days out. Your body holds onto fluid better that way.
- Sip steady, not all at once
- Small sips, all day long
- Salt helps fluid stick around
Oatmeal With Berries Bowl
Oatmeal with berries is a gentle, familiar breakfast that sits well before a hard effort. Cook it with water instead of milk if your stomach runs sensitive on race mornings.
Berries add a little natural sweetness without anything heavy or greasy.
- Gentle, familiar and warm
- Berries add quick natural sugar
Toast With Almond Butter
Toast with almond butter is about as simple as pre race breakfast ideas get. That’s exactly the point. Two slices, a thin spread and maybe half a banana on top.
This one works because there’s nothing unfamiliar in it. Race morning is not the time to try something new.
- Nothing unfamiliar, nothing risky
- Banana adds quick carbs
White Rice Breakfast Bowl
A white rice breakfast bowl sounds unusual until you realize plenty of elite runners swear by it. Plain white rice with a little honey and salt digests fast and sits light.
Not everyone can stomach rice first thing. No shame in that. It’s still worth trying on a practice long run first.
- The elite runner secret
- Digests faster than oats for some
- Honey adds quick energy
- Test it on a long run first
Pancakes With Maple Syrup
Last but definitely not least, we have pancakes with maple syrup. This one feels like a treat but it’s actually smart fueling, mostly carbs and easy to digest.
Make them small and skip the butter if your stomach tends to run nervous. Syrup alone gets the job done just fine, haha!
- Syrup alone is plenty
