This list is for anyone starting from zero on a family tree project. Maybe you’re a beginner who just wants something that looks nice on the wall. Maybe you’re a renter who can’t paint or drill. Either way, you’re covered here!
I scrolled through hundreds of pins for this one, lol! Half of them were so pretty but required skills nobody actually has. The other half were so plain they belonged in a filing cabinet.
So I kept only the ones that are doable, budget-friendly or genuinely pretty in a real home. No fancy studio required. No art degree needed either!
These are organized loosely by style, so the framed and painted ones come first. Then the kid-friendly crafts come next, then the school project options. Skip around based on what you actually need.
Some of these take twenty minutes. Others are a lazy weekend project. Either way, there’s something here whether you’re decorating, teaching a classroom or finishing a big school report, right?
Under each idea I’ve added the details you actually want to know, plus a link to the full step-by-step.
ARVORE GENEALOGICA IDEAS
Rustic Wooden Family Tree Frame
We’re starting off strong with the rustic wooden frame version. Raw wood slices and twine branches give it that farmhouse look everyone seems to want these days.
I always sand the edges first so nothing snags on a sweater. It looks like it came from a boutique but costs about as much as a coffee run. A small tin of wood stain makes the slices pop even more!
- Weekend easy
- Twine branches from the craft aisle
- Sands smooth in ten minutes
- Looks pricier than it is
Watercolor Painted Family Tree
How pretty is this watercolor version? The colors bleed together in a way that makes every branch look a little different. My cheap watercolor set and a fine liner pen are all it takes! This one forgives wobbly lines, which honestly works in its favor. Wobbly hands make the best family trees, apparently, lol!
- Forgiving for beginners
- Dries in under an hour
- Any watercolor set works
- Frames beautifully in white
Hand Drawn Family Tree Sketch
This hand drawn sketch feels personal in a way printed ones don’t. Just a pencil, a ruler and steady hands do the trick. It looked like a museum piece, no exaggeration! She spent less than ten dollars on the whole thing.
- Zero supplies needed
- Just pencil and paper
- Thrift frame finishes the look
- Personal in a way prints aren’t
Family Tree With Photo Frames
This one turns actual photos into the branches instead of just names. It’s sentimental without being cheesy, which is a hard balance to strike, am I right?
I print small photos at a drugstore kiosk every time. Clustered along painted branches they get that layered look everyone asks about. Old black and white shots make it look even more special!
Embroidered Family Tree Hoop Art
Embroidered hoop art is having a moment and this family tree version fits right in. The stitched branches look delicate up close. My first attempt looked nothing like the pattern, honestly. It takes patience, not talent, haha! Start simple before attempting anything fancy.
- Patience over talent
- Basic stitches only
- Hoop from the craft aisle
- Slow but relaxing project
Vintage Scroll Family Tree Design
This vintage scroll design looks like it was pulled straight from an old attic trunk. Tea staining the paper gives it that aged edge. Who doesn’t love that?
I roll mine up and tie it with ribbon for display. It sits next to my old family photos like it belongs there. A wax seal on the ribbon adds a nice touch too!
Family Tree Wall Sticker Decor
Who says a family tree needs a frame at all? These wall stickers go straight onto the wall and peel off clean later.
I’ve used these in two apartments now without a single landlord complaint. Renters, this one is for you, lol! No holes, no drama.
- Renter approved
- No holes in the wall
- Peels off clean later
- Sticks in under a minute
Floral Border Family Tree Chart
The floral border on this one does all the heavy lifting. Little painted flowers frame the whole chart without crowding the names. My drawing skills stop at loops and dots. That is exactly all this needs! It still looks impressively fancy, somehow, lol!
Family Tree Scrapbook Layout
Scrapbook layouts let you go a little wild with stickers, ribbon and old ticket stubs. Every page becomes its own little time capsule. They’re a hit every single time, lol! Guests always ask to flip through them again.
- Sentimental clutter, embraced
- Ribbon scraps work great
- Stickers from the dollar bin
- Old photos welcome here
Modern Minimalist Family Tree Print
Are you guys seeing how clean this minimalist print looks? Just thin black lines and simple typography, nothing extra.
I’ve printed this one at home and mailed it out, both work fine. It suits basically any decor style. Either way it just looks right!
Family Tree Canvas Wall Art
This canvas version turns the whole thing into real wall art instead of a paper chart. It holds up so much better over the years too.
I ordered mine online for about the price of a nice picture frame. My hallway version gets a comment from every single guest. Not in my book do canvas prints ever look cheap!
- Built to last years
- Custom print online
- Sturdier than framed paper
- Hangs like real art
Handprint Family Tree Craft
For the these these infantil crowd, handprints make the sweetest little branches. Paint tiny palms and press them onto the paper as leaves. How cute is this?
My kitchen table turns into a paint disaster every time we do this. It gets messy fast, no shame in that. The mess is half the fun for little hands!
- Messy is the point
- Washable paint only
- Dries flat overnight
- Great for small groups
Colorful Cardboard Family Tree Cutout
Colorful cardboard cutouts bring this whole thing to life without needing a single drawing skill. Cut a trunk shape, glue on paper leaves and call it done. My leftover cereal boxes work perfectly for the base. Nobody will know it started out as breakfast packaging, haha!
Classroom Family Tree Poster
Classroom posters need to survive a lot of little hands, so sturdy poster board is the move here. Bright colors keep the whole thing engaging. It holds up on a bulletin board all semester! It’s a lifesaver during family heritage week.

- Bright colors keep it engaging
- Easy group project

Digital Family Tree Chart Layout
Digital layouts are perfect for anyone who’d rather build this on a laptop than with scissors and glue. Free design tools make it painless. My old poster boards got crushed in a closet within a year. This one exports as a PDF and saves for next year without a scratch! Same, honestly, I’ll never go back to paper.

Family Tree Trifold Project Display
Last but definitely not least, we have the trifold project display. It stands up on its own for presentation day, which is a small miracle, lol!
Add labeled sections, some photos and a bit of color. It’s the one every teacher secretly loves grading, lol! A little glitter tape on the edges never hurts either.
